Togbi Tagbor III, known in private life as Professor Mathew Harry Kwami Tagbor, is a Professor of Public Health at the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), Ghana. Togbi studied at Keta Secondary School and Bishop Herman College, Kpando for his O’ and A’ level certificates respectively. He qualified as a medical doctor in 1993 from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Ghana and obtained the Doctorate in Public Health degree from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, UK in 2005.
His medical career began in Agogo Presbyterian Hospital in the Asante Akyem North district of the Ashanti Region in January 1994. In June 1995, he accepted reposting to the Nkoranza district of the then Brong-Ahafo where he worked at St. Theresa’s Hospital as a full-time clinician from 1995 to 2006. His academic career began when he joined the School of Medical Sciences, KNUST, as a Lecturer in October 2006 and served KNUST in many ways at various points in time over a ten-year period. At KNUST he was head of the departments of Community Health, and Epidemiology and Biostatistics at different points in time. He provided leadership to the departments and worked with other heads of department to deliver on the university’s strategic objectives. He has been involved in several activities to strengthen capacity for graduate training. He was the Coordinator of the Malaria Capacity Development Consortium funded by the Wellcome Trust and was responsible for development and running of PhD Courses, supervisor training for faculty members, and establishment of a mentorship programme for postdoctoral fellows in the College of Health Sciences at KNUST under the DANIDA – Building Stronger Universities Initiative.
At the University of Health and Allied Sciences, he served as Dean of the School of Medicine from 2016 to 2021 and as Pro-Vice Chancellor from 2021 to 2024. He is currently based in the Department of Community Health of the University. His research work is focused on the epidemiology and control of malaria in children and pregnant women, epidemiology and control of neglected tropical diseases, evaluation of disease control interventions, and investigation of implementation strategies for effective health delivery. He is a member of the Malaria Research Capacity Development (MARCAD) Consortium in West and Central Africa. He was an Executive Committee Member of the Ghana Country Coordinating Mechanism of the Global Fund (2021-2023). He is a member of the Ghana Medical Association and a Fellow of the Institute of Directors of Ghana.
